Prior to coming to Eastside, Mr. Herschleb was the Science Curriculum Supervisor for Alachua County Public Schools. Bob Baker, Jerry Douglas, Frankie Hill, Sam Welker, and Philron Wright all served as assistant principals under Mr. Herschleb. During Mr. Herschleb’s tenure as principal, Eastside was ranked number three in the United States for the number of Advanced Placement exams passed as a percentage of the student body. In 1998, Eastside awarded more International Baccalaureate diplomas than any other school in the world. For four years, the Eastside athletic program was identified as one of the top ten in the state of Florida and the football team was district champions for four years. The basketball team went to the state final four and the tennis team won the state championship. Mr. Herschleb oversaw the completion and opening of the new Science and Technology Building and the Institute of Culinary Arts building. A master facilities plan was completed and an architect was selected for the Ninth Grade Classroom building under his oversight. According to Mr Herschleb, the graduation ceremonies were always his most memorable moments as principal and the hiring and supporting of great teachers was his most significant contribution to the school. Mr. Herschleb was asked to leave Eastside to become a part of the new Superintendent’s reorganization of the District Office in late 2000.
