The Great Gatsby

Their Eyes Were Watching God
Zora Neale Hurston

The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne

You will need to purchase copies of the 3 novels so that you can mark (or highlight) important passages and can bring the books to class for discussion the first 4 weeks next fall.

You will also write an essay in class using quotations from the novel. Careful reading should reveal the themes of the novels. You should also be ready to discuss all relevant characters, settings, and events portrayed. Also pay attention to the writing styles as your read.

You will take an objective (multiple choice) test on the plot (what happens) in each novel. Don't rely on Cliff's or Spark Notes. Read the novels yourself!

Finally, you will create a visual representation of one of the novels during the first 3 weeks of school.

You will write an essay explaining a quoted passage from the nonfiction philosophical book during the first 3 weeks of school.

We look forward to meeting you and getting to know you next year.

English III- Honors

The Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn
Mark Twain

A Raisin in the Sun
Lorraine Hansberry

Read the novel and play noting similarities and differences between them so that you can write the comparison-contrast essay due the first day of school. (Both are widely acclaimed and easily available at bookstores and public libraries).

This essay is similar to your essay comparing Medea and Gal Young ‘Un for Mrs. Hansen if you were in English II Honors.

For this essay, you will turn in evidence of prewriting and planning, an edited rough draft and a typed final copy.

Your essay must have some discussion involving issues dealing with race. Other ideas for this comparison could be genre, setting, language, plot, characterization, and themes.

You will also be tested on both pieces when you return to school.

If you have questions, contact Mrs. Lacy at lacyam@gm.sbac.edu
